Ulangan 19:12

19:12 The elders of his own city must send for him and remove him from there to deliver him over to the blood avenger ¹  to die.

Ulangan 21:3

21:3 Then the elders of the city nearest to the corpse ²  must take from the herd a heifer that has not been worked – that has never pulled with the yoke –

Ulangan 21:6

21:6 and all the elders of that city nearest the corpse ³  must wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley. ⁴ 

Ulangan 25:7-8

25:7 But if the man does not want to marry his brother’s widow, then she ⁵  must go to the elders at the town gate and say, “My husband’s brother refuses to preserve his brother’s name in Israel; he is unwilling to perform the duty of a brother-in-law to me!” 25:8 Then the elders of his city must summon him and speak to him. If he persists, saying, “I don’t want to marry her,”

[19:12]  ¹ tn The גֹאֵל הַדָּם (go’el haddam, “avenger of blood”) would ordinarily be a member of the victim’s family who, after due process of law, was invited to initiate the process of execution (cf. Num 35:16-28). See R. Hubbard, NIDOTTE 1:789-94.

[21:3]  ² tn Heb “slain [one].”

[21:6]  ³ tn Heb “slain [one].”

[21:6]  ⁴ tn Heb “wadi,” a seasonal watercourse through a valley.

[25:7]  ⁵ tn Heb “want to take his sister-in-law, then his sister in law.” In the second instance the pronoun (“she”) has been used in the translation to avoid redundancy.
